Paid parking comes to KwaDukuza

The KwaDukuza municipality will be putting in place a paid parking management system within the KwaDukuza CBD urban areas

A new paid parking tariff system that will come into effect as of November 1 is set to boost local employment, creating more than 50 jobs in KwaDukuza, according to the municipality.

The KwaDukuza municipality will be putting in place a paid parking management system within the KwaDukuza CBD urban areas, including Ballito, Stanger and Shakaskraal, charging a rate of R6 an hour.

The process will see parking marshals operating with handheld tariff devices.

They will scan a unique bar code on a bib provided to them which will then open their float for the day.

The marshals will scan vehicle licences or manually capture registration numbers, select the duration, tariff chargers, provide the driver with a receipt and account for revenue collected.

Drivers will be responsible for displaying the receipt on their dashboard. Should customers exceed the time on their receipt, an additional tariff will be charged when they return to their vehicle.

At the end of their shift, the marshal will hand in takings matching the amount on the system generated end of shift report.

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu said such investments would help to not only grow the economy but to address the challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

“This initiative has been firstly necessitated by a number of concerns that have been raised by the public and it is our key responsibility to ensure that we listen to our people when they speak and it remains our task to deliver on their wishes.”

Correction: The article previously stated that the parking management system would only be implemented in the Stanger CBD, however it has since been confirmed that other areas will include Ballito and Shakaskraal.
