Storm in a C-cup at local restaurant

A woman claimed she had been unfairly dismissed from Old North at Karibu without being paid and had then further suffered the humiliation of being forced to leave without a shirt on

A dispute over money led to a waitress walking out of a local restaurant in nothing but her bra recently. But the two versions of events leading up to this are as far removed as a wet T-Shirt competition gets from modesty.

Kathleen Booth approached the Courier, claiming she had been unfairly dismissed from Old North at Karibu without being paid and had then further suffered the humiliation of being forced to leave without a shirt on.

“I would have become a permanent employee the week after I was dismissed,” Booth said.

She claimed she had arrived at Old North that Friday (September 22) and had asked her employer if she could borrow R30 from the pay due to her so that she could buy cigarettes.

“She asked me very rudely where my float was and why I did not just use some money from it.”

Booth told the Courier she had never needed a float before at Old North.

“When I told her I did not have a float, she said she cannot employ someone who does not know how to handle money and that I was fired.

“She then demanded I take off the Old North shirt I was wearing immediately.

“I tried telling her I would bring it the next day but she wanted it right then and there.”

Booth said she was not paid the last of the money she was owed and that she was forced to walk out in full view of several families wearing nothing but her bra.

However the owner, Melanie St Clair-Mulley, relates a different version of events.

“Kathleen approached me on August 12 desperate for work. I did not need any extra staff at the time but I felt awful that she had no money for food. I employed her on a temporary basis as a waitress.”

St Clair-Mulley said every day Booth asked to borrow money despite the fact that she was being paid at the end of each shift and receiving cash tips.

When Booth arrived at work and once again asked for a loan, St Clair-Mulley asked her where all her money was going and why she did not use some from her float.

“She then said she was never told to carry a float, which I find very strange given that all the other waiters carry floats and she needs one to give her customers change for their bills.”

She told Booth she should leave as she was tired of lending her money every day.

St Clair-Mulley said Booth became very angry when she would not lend her the R30. She then told her she would need to return the shirt she was wearing as it was property of Old North, when Booth said she did not have another, St Clair-Mulley told her to bring it back the next day but that she was no longer employed there.

“She then took off the t-shirt and apron and threw it at my feet before storming off through the bar in her blue bra. All my kitchen staff where trying to get her to put her shirt back on but she didn’t want to hear it! I guess she wanted to make a statement.”

St Clair-Mulley said Booth had subsequently also been evicted from Karibu Farm, where she had been living, as she had not paid her rent for three months.
