There is power in silence
A large group from Salt Rock's Linc Church drove to Durban last Saturday to join the walk, organised by the global anti-human trafficking organization A21.
They walk in silence – single file, their mouths taped closed.
Walk for Freedom is a silent protest done annually in 400 cities across the world on October 14 against the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, generating more than $150 billion every year: human trafficking.
A large group from Salt Rock’s Linc Church drove to Durban last Saturday to join the walk, organised by the global anti-human trafficking organization A21.
Linc Church’s Cath Slevin was one of the 330 walkers this year and said being part of this powerful movement was always an awesome feeling.
“The silence of the walk really makes a statement, as we walk for those who have no voice,” said Slevin, who has been involved with A21 and Walk for Freedom through Linc Church for a few years now.
Last year about 350 people participated in the walk through Ballito.
“All the money raised goes to A21 to aid in their work in rescuing and rehabilitating those caught in human trafficking, as well as prosecuting those involved.
“They also have safe houses and focus on education in vulnerable communities, helping them understand and be aware of the dangers and the signs to look out for of modern day slavery.”
Slevin said the types of trafficking include sex trafficking, forced or bonded labour, involuntary domestic servitude and child soldiers.
“The majority of human trafficking happens through false job advertisement – innocent people who hope to better themselves and end up being forced into prostitution or the likes.”
