Protect your pets on Guy Fawkes

Animal owners should take precautions to keep their pets safe tonight

It’s Guy Fawkes tonight (November 5) and traditionally a time when people let off fireworks in commemoration of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
The Gunpowder Plot was meant to kill King James I and to destroy the English Parliament with one of the main conspirators a man named Guy Fawkes.
Although most Dolphin Coast residents are against the loud, bright and colourful displays, according to the municipal bylaws, available on KwaDukuza’s website, fireworks are allowed on November 5.

Take precautions, protect your animals

Animal owners can take the following precautions to keep their pets safe:
  • Avoid using fireworks in residential areas or anywhere near animals.
  • Keep your pets indoors.
  • Provide a safe place for your dogs to retreat. Small, enclosed spaces often have a calming effect on stressed animals (a crate is a good option if your dog is used to using one).
  • Distract your pets with their favourite treats and chew toys.
  • Get identification devices for your animals (eg. collar tags with names and contact details). Microchip ID is recommended by the SPCA as it is permanent and tamper-proof.
  • You can purchase sedative tablets from the Dolphin Coast SPCA which are between R10 and R12 depending on the weight of the dog.

Make the SPCA your first port of call should you find a lost or stray animal or if you have lost your pet.

Animals are kept at the SPCA for 7 days before they are put up for adoption.

If your pet has gone missing, ensure to visit your local SPCA’s within the 7 day time frame.

For after hours emergencies call the Dolphin Coast SPCA on 083 212 6103.
