Report back: Active citizenry

Active citizens are important to society on so many levels.

It is fantastic to see citizens play an active role in society. Over the past few weeks we have seen residents of Ballito and Salt Rock coming together to clean up the nurdles as they head down to the beach.

There is no question this will be a long process, and social media has helped to educate us all in understanding the magnitude of the problem.

We also saw the tragic murder of Siphokazi Khumalo, a waitress from a restaurant in Ballito.

She was assisted by a local resident who did not think about his own safety, but rather tried to save a woman’s life. He is a hero in anyone’s eyes.

The public came out to show their support for Siphokazi when her attacker applied for bail.

We all need to stand up and make our voices heard.

The paid parking system to be introduced by KDM has created an outcry amongst many residents.

While there is no doubt we have a parking shortage over the festive season, there was no engagement with the public or businesses, or indeed the UIP who manage much of the area where the parking system will be in place in Ballito.

Both an online and physical petition were started by a resident which have gathered almost 2000 signatures at last count.

Active citizens are important to society on so many levels.

A transparent government needs active citizens to hold it accountable.

The Democratic Alliance celebrates these active citizens in our community on the North Coast!
