Orphan Fund in action this festive season
Before you go out and splurge on lavish gifts this Christmas, consider the children who live with virtually nothing and to whom the holiday season is not as kind.
The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund has been helping orphans in KZN for 14 years and – with Christmas fast approaching – they are not going to slow down anytime soon.
The festive period is a time of joy for many, but for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community it is not all presents and fruit cake.
This is why the Orphan Fund needs your help with their Christmas Box Collection.
They are appealing for non-perishable foods (biscuits, sweets, concentrated juice, tinned fruit, nuts and raisins, chips etc.), stationery, personal hygiene products and toys (new and/or previously-loved).
Toys may be gift-wrapped and labelled to make sure the presents go to a boy or girl of the appropriate age.
You are asked to please donate by December 4 so that all the gifts can get to the children in time. Orphan Fund coordinator June Mdlolo said they were overwhelmed with gratitude towards the kind-hearted residents of the Dolphin Coast who open their hearts and give so generously.
“As Christmas draws near, we implore you to once again please remember the less fortunate amongst us who will not celebrate Christmas as lavishly as we might, due to their dire circumstances, and donate at the listed drop-off points.”
Drop off points for the Christmas Box Collection include: Crawford College North Coast, Sheffield Beach Pre Primary, Ashton International College, Tiffany’s Superspar, Pick ‘n Pay and Checkers in the Ballito Junction, Lifestyle Spar and Seeff.

The Orphan Fund has been busy on the Dolphin Coast in recent months, with donations of clothing – both small and bulk donations – going to hundreds of disadvantaged children through selected NGO’s.
Meanwhile the popular Orphan Fund Bass Fishing Competition at Dudley Pringle Dam raised R35 000 and a Ladies golf day at Umhlali Country Club raked in R14 000.
This year’s Soup, Socks and Snuggles campaign was also a rousing success, providing clothing and food to desperate orphans.
So, before you go out and splurge on lavish gifts this Christmas, consider the children who live with virtually nothing and to whom the holiday season is not as kind.
