Puppies abandoned on roadside in Ballito, rescued by good Samaritan
Carelessly abandoned, the litter of puppies is lucky to be alive after they were rescued by passersby.
Seven tiny puppies were left for dead on the side of the road just outside Ballito this afternoon (Friday) before being rescued by a kind hearted passerby.
At about 2.30pm Tammy Chapman and her daughter Ava were driving to Ballito when they came to the intersection of the R102 and Ballito Drive in front of Manor Estates.
“There was a white Isuzu on the roadside and I thought the driver was behaving a little strangely,” said Chapman.
When she then noticed a tiny puppy walking into the road, she made an immediate U-turn. The driver of the bakkie had simply pulled over, dumped the puppies out and left them there.
Chapman and her daughter were not the only ones to notice the puppies being abandoned. She told the Courier that a pair of young boys were also trying to round up the pups, apparently to “sell them.”
Chapman’s daughter Ava said: “The boys were starting to get a little rough with the puppies, holding them by their necks and more.”

The Chapmans are a family who are passionate about animals, having five dogs, four cats and a snake at home. While Tammy seems less than keen about the snake, Ava has a soft spot for them all.
The pair were joined by another man who had been passing by and helped convince the boys that they could not sell the dogs, nor could they just walk away with seven infant animals. However, Chapman said they did let them have two of the healthier puppies after the boys agreed to take special care of them.
The remaining five were rushed to the Ballito Vet where Chapman was joined by Dee Allan from Sable’s Creatures, who will try find a home for them. The puppies will be given a thorough check to make sure they are healthy and in good condition.
The puppies – all male – are five to six weeks old and are of the Africanis breed, often considered a mongrel breed but in actual fact one of the most ancient canine bloodlines on the planet, famous for their brave and loyal natures.
At present they are at the vet but without a home as Sable’s Creatures is full to overflowing and cannot accommodate more animals. Therefore they are appealing for foster families to provide temporary homes for the dogs until permanent ones can be found.
If you think you can open your home and your heart to one or more of the puppies, whether it be to foster or adopt them, contact Sable’s Creatures at sablescreatures@gmail.com or 082 326 4499.
