WATCH: Criminals beware
Police and multiple security agencies swooped down on a stunned Shakaskraal last week Friday in the first of several largescale joint operations planned for the festive season.
Dozens of SAPS officers and security personnel working in tandem fanned out and marched down both sides of the R102 through the middle of town, seeking out criminals in a show of force that drew every eye.
One resident, who did not wish to be named, told the Courier she was impressed by the operation.
“It is about time the criminals get rooted out of our streets,” she said.
Several arrests were made for possession of drugs and trading in illegal electronics, and a few weapons such as knopkieries confiscated.
Spot searches were also conducted, both of passing vehicles and several shops and street vendors.
After sweeping Shakaskraal clean, the task force made their way over to Ballito where they conducted a similar patrol downtown.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay said this was all part of their plan to get tough on crime and step up their presence ahead of the holiday season.
“Traditionally, we see an upsurge of crime at this time of year and we want to get ahead of it,” Pillay said.
“We are in a situation at the moment where we are facing a whole new generation of thieves. Between SAPS and local security agencies we have caught so many of the ‘old boys’ of local crime that new criminals have stepped in to fill their shoes.”
He said they were planning on keeping the pressure on throughout the holidays with roadblocks, patrols, increased police presence, awareness programs and more planned to ensure the safety of locals and visitors to the Dolphin Coast.
“We are in the process of getting additional officers from other stations to help us during this busy time.”

Pillay warned that there would be no leniency for those caught committing crimes and urged people to report all incidents to the police. He said that shoplifting was on the increase and warned potential shoplifters that they would no longer be given the opportunity for bail, but would have to stay in the cells until they appear in court.
“Drunk driving is also a serious issue every year at this time. Be warned, when you are caught you will face a minimum bail charge of R2000 and that is before you even get to court.”
Pillay also said they had seen a drastic increase in criminal activity in downtown Ballito and warned people to be vigilant. He further warned drug abusers that police would be on the lookout for them. He said they were particularly worried about the new drug called flakka.
Nearly all the security agencies on the North Coast were present and doing their part.
Alpha Security’s Rex Hunt told the Courier the level of cooperation between the various agencies and SAPS was very encouraging. He said crime at shopping centres and the beaches was expected to pick up.
“We would like to warn people not to leave valuables in their cars, and when you go to the beach do not simply lock your valuables in the boot, it will also be broken into.”

He also warned that ATM crime, pick pocketing and more was expected to increase as holidaymakers descend for the festive season.
Meanwhile Ballito Neighbourhood Watch chairman Gary Frances urged the public to use common sense and ensure their own safety.
“Another worry is if you leave your house windows open, anything within arm’s reach is fair game to criminals. Do yourself a favour and do not create temptation.”
