Etete housing project on hold again

Residents are now calling for their councillor Promise Dube to be removed.

The issue of the Etete RDP housing project that had been causing violent protests for the past four years, is on hold again.

Residents are now calling for their councillor Promise Dube to be removed.

This was said at a meeting that was held on Sunday with KwaDukuza Municipality speaker, Phumlile Zulu, and KDM officials.

The meeting was called by residents as they were looking for answers regarding the housing projects and Dube, who they claim does not call community meetings, to give updates regarding development in ward 20.

“The housing project had been on hold for the past two or three months and there has been no report as to why it stopped,” said resident Njabulo Miya.

Miya said Zulu and the officials did not give reasons as to why the project was on hold, but said it would commence on January 8.

However, KwaDukuza media liaison officer, Sipho Mkhize said human settlement was present at the meeting and it was explained that the delay was due to the lack of budget.

KDM speaker addressing the Etete residents early this year.

“An agreement between the department and municipality has been signed, this was signed on Thursday, November 23. However, because the construction industry is winding down for the year, the project will only start in January and this was communicated at the meeting and received well by the community,” said Mkhize.

Residents of Ekhalafukwe have been protesting for years, blocking the R102.

The most recent one was in March where frustrated residents closed the construction site of Motheo Construction Group.

They were angry because mayor Ricardo Mthembu promised them last year in April, that at least 60 houses would be built by December and not even a single house has been built.
