Redesigning the township

Meet one of the winners of the 2017 ILembe Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur Competition.

Creating stunning building designs from his dining room table has been a winning formula for 29-year-old Ilembe Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur Competition winner Ntokozo Ngcobo.

The owner of DCB Projects has used his passion to bring uniquely designed homes to his township and help people from his neighbourhood identify great opportunities.

Specialising in architectural services, bills of quantity, site preparation, bricklaying, alterations, roofing, tiling, painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, drains and utility installation, Ngcobo said he planned to build an empire for generations to come.

“When I do a house plan, I prefer to manage the construction of it, so that I will be sure that it is built the way I had planned,” said Ngcobo.

Saying that he is living his childhood dream, the young architect feels that most people in rural areas and townships do not understand the importance of a house plan, forgetting that it’s actually the heart of every house.

“I feel it is my duty to educate people from my home town about the importance of that ‘piece of paper’. I believe it is our job as the youth to redesign the shape of our townships, and I am starting by ensuring that we stay in nice homes,” said Ngcobo.

His clients praised him for always being available, giving sound advice and leaving them feeling confident that the work was being handled expertly.

“He was very friendly and he was prepared to listen when he was doing my house plans. He redesigned my house from a four-room into an eightroom home,” said Thembeni Zondi from Mandeni.

To ensure that his company stands apart from its competitors, Ngcobo said he wants to open a hardware store to supply building material to clients who will be using his company to manage and run their projects.

“There is land in Mangethe and Maphumulo to plant trees that will produce timber that can be used for building. We will also manufacture bricks for building and paving and precast concrete materials.”

Ngcobo matriculated at ML Sultan Secondary School and went to Coastal College to obtain his certificate for architectural drafting in 2011.

He then went to work at an interior design company in Durban until 2013 when he started his own business.

The driven young man said he is planning to help students who want to pursue architecture as a career, starting by sponsoring high school pupils with drawing equipment.

“There is one thing I enjoy about running my own business, I get to be as creative as I can, there are no limitations,” said Ngcobo.

He said he is planning to get his professional Architecture degree to boost his business profile.

He further thanked Ilembe Chamber for the guidance given to them over the course of the competition.
