Jenade Augustine hosted her first photo exhibition at Mangethe Primary School on Saturday
In the heart of Mangethe sugar cane farms, north of the Tugela River, there is a 20-year-old girl with nothing but her camera and a vision to tell the world about the beauty of her small community.
Jenade Augustine hosted her first photo exhibition at Mangethe Primary School on Saturday, and it was attended by 45 people, some coming from as far as Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
The young photographer was able to raise money to buy pre-owned cameras which she will use for photography workshops in rural schools.

Along with fundraising, the exhibition also celebrated the effort made by Mangethe Primary School teachers working under unpleasant circumstances.
“Seeing the dedication of teachers, I had to tell people. I mean it is a very poor school but if you get there, the children are always wearing happy faces, focusing on getting their work done,” said Augustine.
The photos exhibited told of the everyday life of the pupils and teachers of the school and after the exhibition, all photos were donated to the school.

Augustine will be graduating with a bachelor of visual art, specialising in photography, at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth next year March.
She plans to use her qualification to teach underprivileged school pupils the basics of photography.
“The least I can do is to share my knowledge and skills with the children. I want them to understand that photography is a skill that can be used to tell stories.”
