Residents angry after child falls into drain

KwaDukuza municipality media liaison officer, Sipho Mkhize, promised that KDM will fix the problem urgently.

Residents of the Martin area in Etete (Ward 20) are furious after a two-year- old child nearly drowned in a blocked drain last Wednesday.

The residents are accusing KwaDukuza Municipality of ignoring them, as they had been reporting this drain for years. The drain is between houses on a stream running through the township.
Whenever it rains, water overflows into their homes.

One resident even had to break the wall of his new house to let the water out.

They believe the water is a health hazard because it attracts mosquitos and children often play in the filthy water.

“My child is currently attending the clinic for a check-up. She was playing near the drain and ended up getting into the water stream and the water is very deep. She was rescued by other children, who are older than her,” said resident Cecilia Martin.

Another resident, Trishen Mahabeer, said every time it rains he needs to prepare for flooding of his home.

KwaDukuza municipality media liaison officer, Sipho Mkhize, promised that KDM will fix the problem urgently.

Water from the
drain is flowing into people’s homes.
