Making a MTB difference

Dumisani Ndzimakwe is a living example of that, as he has been helping the children of Shaka’s Head with cycling lessons for the past four years

Being unemployed does not mean you can not do anything to help in your community.

Dumisani Ndzimakwe is a living example of that, as he has been helping the children of Shaka’s Head with cycling lessons for the past four years.

His dedication and passion finally paid off when he was noticed and employed by the KZN Cycling Development Trust, as their development officer in the Ilembe region in July.

“Now I get to teach children outside Shaka’s Head how to cycle and the talent and reaction from the kids is overwhelming,” said Ndzimakwe.

He had been working with his homeboy, Goodman Manqele at the Gxoba Istibulo Academy, training more than 40 children daily, for three years until he decided to open his own academy “Ushaka Rising Heroes Academy” early this year.

He is currently training more than twenty children under his academy and three of them will be going to compete on a mountain bike, BMX and road bike race in Howick next year.

“I want to see no children found bored on the streets due to not being interested in soccer, which is the most popular sport in the townships, while there is a wonderful and enjoyable sport that every child can take part in. I want to introduce cycling and make the children understand it more than just riding a bike to school or around your home.

“Most of them really like cycling, however, the lack of knowledge about the opportunities of succeeding with the sport keeps them from their potential of being super good cyclists. I want to change that.”
