Simbithi chef joins elite club

His passion for food, eye for detail, unique sense of flavour profiles and impeccable plating skills have earned him acclaim and respect in the culinary arena.

Simbithi Country Club and Fig Tree Restaurant are celebrating the induction of Executive Chef Daryn Bowers into the elite Chaîne des Rôtisseurs.

Chef Bowers was inducted at a ceremony and gala dinner at The Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town on November 26.

The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs was established in France in 1248 and was first represented in Africa in the early 1980’s. As joining the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is by invitation only, it is an exceptional honour for Bowers and the Simbithi Country Club.

Not only was he inducted into the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs for his culinary achievements, he was also received into the prestigious Ordre Mondial des Gourmets Degustateurs (OMGD), a branch of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs that recognises members who have excelled in wines, spirits, liqueurs and hand-crafted beverages.

Having headed up the kitchen at the country club for just over a year, Bowers’ confidence, charisma and warmth have endeared him not only to his band of chefs and waitrons, but to residents of Simbithi Eco-Estate, golfers and regular guests at The Fig Tree and Drop Zone Bar.

His passion for food, eye for detail, unique sense of flavour profiles and impeccable plating skills have earned him acclaim and respect in the culinary arena.

“There’s no greater feeling than being able to express oneself on a plate, constantly learning and developing new skills and techniques. A passion of mine is to be table-side, interacting with guests as they sample different dishes,” he says.

“For me, cooking is an art form. I aim to inspire my kitchen brigade to create dishes that look fantastic, and taste brilliant. Much of my time goes into mentoring those around me and I take a lot of inspiration from my team.”

Joining the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is the fulfilment of a long-held dream.

“When I first started out, the Executive Chef who trained me had his Chaîne des Rôtisseurs plaque, certificates and regalia mounted in his office. I knew then – as I know now – it is something incredibly special and a distinct honour for any chef asked to join.”

Simbithi Eco-Estate and country club general manager Malcolm Samuel congratulated Bowers on behalf of residents, and guests.

“We are extremely proud to have a chef of Daryn’s calibre at Simbithi Country Club. We are certain this achievement will only add to the remarkable dining experience at our eateries, and we extend our sincerest congratulations to our Executive Chef.”
