A reward offered yesterday morning (Friday) for information regarding Wednesday night’s shocking rock-throwing attack has soared to R150 000 as the community’s outrage reaches a crescendo.
The first steps towards finding the person or persons who dropped a rock from an N2 overhead bridge near Ballito onto the car of a holidaying family, killing two children, were taken yesterday when DA member of parliament Dean Macpherson offered of a R5000 reward which swelled quickly as people reacted to the deaths of 16-year-old Amina and Abdur Haffajee (7) on Wednesday night.
“I have been blown away by the generosity,” Macpherson said.
The car driven by Ebrhim Haffajee of Vereeniging was hit by the rock dropped from the bridge over the N2 highway on the Greylands Road leading to Crocodile Creek.
“I am challenging corporates – specifically in the Ballito area but also in the wider Durban metro – to contribute,”said Macpherson.

The rock smashed through the windshield and tore through the car. Photo: supplied.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay told the Courier an inquest had been opened after the event and the charges being investigated had since been upgraded to murder.

Pillay said they believed robbery may have been the motive behind the attack.
“It is very possible they dropped the rock hoping to force the driver to stop so that they could then rob the occupants.”
He revealed that police had learned a rock had been thrown at a vehicle from the same spot barely an hour earlier.
Pillay said police were talking to informants within the community. The Umhlali task team is on the case and patrols are being conducted in the area.
