Smooth sailing in Blythedale

Three police roadblocks and strict enforcement of “no alcohol” saw the numbers drop from an out-of-control crowd of about 10 000 to about 2 000.

Blythedale residents were positively surprised when the notorious Blythedale Beach festival went off without a glitch for the first time in six years.

The annual festival on December 16 and 17 organised by KwaDukuza municipality has gained a reputation for causing complete destruction and chaos in the usually quiet coastal village.

Through the years, residents have endured loud music, all night partying, sex scenes outside their homes and backed up traffic that leaves them unable to exit or enter the residential area.

Residents have complained that their concerns were not addressed by the municipality.

Three police roadblocks and strict enforcement of “no alcohol” saw the numbers drop from an out-of-control crowd of about 10 000 to about 2 000, who were mostly well behaved.

The crowd at Blythedale beachfront was well behaved, say happy residents.

The Blythedale Ratepayers and Residents Association was appreciative of the stricter control.

“It was relatively quiet and peaceful compared to previous years and the music came to a stop at around 9.30pm.

“We must acknowledge KDM’s effort as there were about three roadblocks where people who were in possession of alcohol was turned away. Some drivers were turning around when they saw the traffic officers.”

However, the association still remains adamant that mayor Ricardo Mthembu keep to his promise of finding a new venue for the party, possibly at Nonoti, for next New Year.

KwaDukuza media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize said the municipality would start looking for a suitable venue early this year.
