UPDATE: Desainagar murder accused denied bail
Bongani Gumede appeared before the Verulam Magistrates Court this Monday and has been remanded in custody until March 8.
Bail has been denied for the 29-year-old man accused of murdering his girlfriend and her five-year-old child before burying their bodies in a shallow grave in Desainagar, Tongaat.
A trail of blood on the road led to the gruesome discovery last December in a pathway opposite Shalimar Gardens flat in Park Avenue Road.
“After a tip-off from a passerby, police noticed there was a trail of blood staining the pathway following through the bush to the M4 Highway.
“On closer observation, police noticed that someone had been dragged further inside the bush. The police then followed the trail which led them to a heap of sand. Search and rescue were summoned and the two bodies of a woman aged around 30 and a five-year child were found in a shallow grave with the help of a sniffer dog.

“They both sustained face and head injuries,” said Tongaat SAPS spokesperson Patrick Ngwane.
It is believed the woman and her child were from KwaDukuza but were visiting her boyfriend, Bongani Gumede, for the holidays.
Police arrested Gumede two weeks later in Jozini, North of Zululand.
He appeared before the Verulam Magistrates Court this Monday and has been remanded in custody until March 8.
