Residents of an informal settlement near Shakaskraal who have blocked the R102 with burning tyres, are demanding to speak to KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu.

KwaDukuza municipality officials have tried to address the crowd of protesters, but they are demanding the mayor or KZN human settlement and public works MEC Ravi Pillay.

Over 60 residents from the Ekhalafukwe area in Etete have blocked the R102 with burning tyres and allegedly stoned a truck this morning.

They are believed to be fed up with the slow progress of a promised housing project, unemployment and their councillor Promise Dube.

There have been several public meetings held in the last month with KwaDukuza municipality in an attempt to resolve these issues, without success.

In December the Courier reported that the housing project had once again been on hold for a few months due to a lack of budget. Residents were told that work would begin again on January 8 (yesterday), but no work had started.
