‘Homeless’ Etete protesters take over R102, stone truck

The lack of delivery on the promised Etete housing project has been behind violent protests for the past four years.

A crowd of about 60 Etete residents from the Ekhalafukwe area have blocked the R102 with burning tyres, allegedly stoning a truck this morning.

They are apparently fed up with the slow progress of the promised housing project, unemployment and their councillor Promise Dube.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said more people are expected to join the protest.

“The road is closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes to get to Ballito or Stanger,” said Pillay.

There have been several public meetings held in the last month with KwaDukuza municipality, in an attempt to resolve these issues, however it appears without success.

In December the Courier reported that the housing project had once again been on hold for a few months due to a lack of budget. Residents were told that work would begin again on January 8 (yesterday), which could explain why they are back on the streets.

We were unable to get comment from KDM at the time of going to print.
