UPDATE: Mayor to meet with Etete protesters

KDM has received a memorandum from the steering committee representing ward 20 (Etete)

KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu is expected to address Etete residents by next Tuesday after protesters took to the streets yesterday (Tuesday).

The Ekhalafukwe informal settlement in Etete blocked the R102 with burning tyres to show thier dissatisfaction with the slow progress of thier housing project and the high rate of unemployment.

They also ask for the removal of their councillor Promise Dube.

The residents were demanding to speak with the KwaDukuza mayor or human settlement MEC Ravi Pillay.

KDM sent a task team to the area consisting of members of council and officials.

“In our last meeting with KDM officials, we were told that the housing project was going to start on Monday. But the site manager said that they are still waiting for the go-ahead from the municipality. That means KDM lied to us, ” said resident Njabulo Miya.

Regarding the public meeting, Miya said they were told it will be held on Sunday.

KDM has issued a statement saying the mayor will be responding to the resident’s complains when he meets them.

“We have met and agreed with the steering committee that our task now is to look into the issues contained in the memorandum and thereafter respond accordingly in a public meeting.

“One of the things that the mayor is expected to unpack is the work-plan of the contractor and provide details of the commencement of the project.”

The protest ended yesterday and the road is open.
