Mozambique spitting cobra attacks sleeping girl – Esenembe

After a rocky night, the girl is in a stable condition in hospital.

A little girl was bitten by a Mozambique spitting cobra while asleep in her family home in the Esenembe area last night.

The snake had bitten the seven-year-old girl on the chin and when her mom ran into her room, the snake spat into her eyes.

North Coast snake catcher Neville Wolmarans was immediately contacted and rushed to the farm house at about 8:15pm.

“I was told they were already on route to Netcare Alberlito Hospital and after checking that the hospital was aware of their pending arrival, my nephew Skye Coulter and I raced out to the farm to capture and remove the snake,” said Wolmarans.

“The female snake is approximately 1,2 metres long and not in the best condition.”

After the rescue, Wolmarans went to the hospital to check on the girl.

“She was stable, sedated and had received the anti-venom within an hour of being bitten. The swelling had started to recede although there was a bit of discoloration at the site of the bite. The mother had also been attended to.”

He said the girl’s condition deteriorated during the night.

“She was placed on a ventilator and given a further two ampules of anti-venom. She was in a stable condition this morning.”
