A breath of fresh air for Curro Mount Richmore

Samantha Smit has stepped into the head's shoes and looks to bring a breath of fresh air and renewed vigour to Curro.

The school year has barely begun and already Curro Mount Richmore has been a whirlwind of activity as a new chapter begins for the school.

Samantha Smit has stepped into the head’s shoes and looks to bring a breath of fresh air and renewed vigour to Curro.

The 45-year-old originally hails from Krugersdorp and started her career as a teacher at Westridge in Gauteng.

Thereafter she moved over to private school and taught at both Trinity and Maragon, where she was the deputy head.
“I am passionate about education and I am a strong believer in servant-leadership,” said Smit.

Smit said she has always led from the front and is not scared to get into the trenches.

“Education is a collaborative effort between teachers, parents and children.”

Being a woman in a power-position also does not scare her in the slightest.

“I think in general women have to work a little harder just to prove ourselves, but Curro is very good when it comes to gender issues and I have never had a problem while working for them.”

Smit has a BComm in accounting from the University of Pretoria as well as a Higher Diploma in Education. She told the Courier she was a firm proponent of 21st century education for students in order to turn them into productive 21st century citizens.

“21st century education is not just about computers, it is about imparting skills that will make our children capable, successful adults,” Smit explained.

“My vision for Curro Mount Richmore is for us to become the school of choice on the North Coast, not just for learners but also for educators and, of course, to strive for nothing less than academic excellence. At the end of the day, that is what this is all about.”
