Teacher receives paid leave for 14 years

A substitute teacher who had been filling in for her saw the teacher's payslips at the school.

The KZN education department is investigating how a teacher from a school in Maphumulo has been on leave for 14 years and is apparently still receiving a salary.

This was revealed after a substitute teacher who had been filling in for her saw the teacher’s payslips at the school.

KZN education department spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa said the matter was handed over to the human resources department for investigation.

He added that there were a number of similar cases especially in schools within the Ilembe district.

“We still need to investigate the claims made by the substitute teacher but we can confirm that this is a problem we are facing in a number of schools and it would be unfair to mention this particular school’s name.

“Once we find out what is going on we will act accordingly.”
