Get to know the North Coast – 70 000 years ago!
Don't miss the opportunity to peer back 70 000 years through the curtain of time to the North Coast's ancient past.
German archaeologist Professor Nicholas Conard will be opening a window into the ancient past of KZN next Thursday, March 1 at Crawford College North Coast.
Unknown to many, just a few kilometers outside Tongaat lies an ancient rock shelter hiding clues to humanities past stretching back 70 000 years and more.
The world famous Sibudu Rock shelter on the Tongaat River is an archaeologist’s treasure trove which has delivered discoveries rewriting our understanding of human history.
Just last year studies of the DNA of a 2 000-year-old skeleton found at the site in the 1960’s led scientists to push back the date for the emergence of modern humans worldwide by as much as 100 000 years.
Sibudu is also the site of the oldest known use of bedding in the world, among a series of other exciting developments.

Professor Conard, a scientist with the Archaeology Department at Tubingen University in Germany, will deliver a presentation on the amazing finds at the Sibudu Cave next week.
“We have an outstanding archaeological cave in our area with National Heritage recognition,” said Ken Lever of the Friends of Sibudu (FoS) NPO.
“There are outstanding finds that go back to between 75 000 and 80 000 years, and indicate amazing technical advances well ahead of previous finds in Africa and elsewhere in the world.”
This talk is especially aimed at senior school students and FoS encourages all at schools in the North Coast area (and parents of course) to attend this one-off lecture by an international expert.
Professor Conard will concentrate on the archaeology and the identified finds which include Late Stone Age spears, bows, arrows, clothing, natural glues, and of course the famous sedge bedding.
So if you are interested in the history of our land and the development of homo sapiens and would like to gaze back through the murky mists of time to an age long past, make sure you do not miss this opportunity.
The talk is scheduled to start at 5.30pm and run till 6.45pm. Students and school children enter for free and adults will pay R20 at the door to attend.
Membership forms for the Friends of Sibudu Association will also be available.
