Show you care about rare

Help raise awareness for international Rare Disease Day on February 28.

Help paint Ballito denim by wearing your denims and the blue ribbon sticker to help raise awareness for international Rare Disease Day on February 28.

The rare disease mom on a mission behind this day is Ballito’s Jill Long, whose son Jason suffers from two rare diseases and is a pupil at Bloom Special Needs School.

“Jason has both combined primary immunodeficiency and cyclic vomiting syndrome.

“He may also have mitochondrial disease which has been clinically diagnosed, but not confirmed with the DNA tests or a muscle biopsy,” said Long, who has dedicated her life to helping her 11-year-old boy who was born at 31 weeks, weighing only one kilogram and has been tube fed his whole life until November last year.

Jason Long is a pro at hospital visits and is very brave during all the procedures.

“My main reason to get involved is to create awareness, educate our community about rare diseases and celebrate those who are living with rare diseases.”

Jill said she would like to challenge schools and businesses in Ballito to join her on her mission by encouraging their scholars, teachers and employees to buy a Rare Disease Day ribbon sticker for R10 each and wear denim on February 28.

“If your school does not allow casual day or denim, you could just wear the sticker with your uniform. All proceeds collected will be paid to Rare Diseases South Africa.”

To buy your sticker, send a mail to jillybeans0103@gmail.com.
