Ballito resident inspired to make a difference

After reading about a group of men in wheelchairs refusing to let their disabilities hold them back, Ballito’s Di Everett was compelled to do something to show her support.

“It is very humbling to see the way these men live with such positive attitudes,” said Everett, who donated a generator to the men last week after reading about them in the Courier.

The Malangeni Commune (The Rising Sun) is made up of six men, both quadriplegic and paraplegic, who have surprised many with their attitudes towards their disabilities.

Malangeni’s Frank Kruger thanked her sincerely for her donation.

“Some of the guys sleep on air mattresses, so when the power goes out they end up getting pressure sores or cannot reach the harness we use to get out of bed.”

One of the ways the Malangeni men are making themselves useful is by training carers. At present they have trained about 30 people how to care for those with physical disabilities.

As Kruger says: “It’s our limbs that are paralyzed, not our minds.”
