Heating up the kitchen in Tongaat

Chefs with a passion for cooking and a heart for helping, graduated from the Mission Ablaze chef school last week.

Feeding over 500 underprivileged people for the past 20 years, the Mission Ablaze non-profit organisation in Tongaat established a chef school last year as an extension of the work already being done by the organisation.

The school, under the expert guidance of executive chef Andrew Pillay (ex-Tsogo Sun and DUT), the South African Chefs’ Association, The Masterchef Culinary Academy and mentorship of Fairmont Zimbali Resort, was able to assist young men and women from previously disadvantaged communities to become proficient in the art of cookery.

The one year course was aimed at students who wanted to become chefs but their family and the financial situation do not allow for them to pay R120 000 per year for the average chef course.

Mission Ablaze chef school graduates from left, Tymendree Govender, Collette Cox, Sifiso Tshutsha, Kimmel Pillay and Inamandla Khunana.

Certificates were handed out to five of the seven graduates last week by Elsu Gericke (SACA) Head: Professional Body and Skills Development and Fatima Stanley Director: The Masterchef Culinary Academy. Two of the students were unable to attend.

Fairmont Zimbali Resort Executive Chef Tony Kocke told the budding chefs that only two characteristics were required to grow in the profession: discipline and commitment.
