The gift of words
Leean Ramnarain wants to give back to the children of rural and disadvantaged communities.
A book is one of the last safe places on earth where ideas can be fully explored without fear or discomfort.
This is the gift Leean Ramnarain wants to give back to the children of rural and disadvantaged communities.
The Stanger local told the Courier that as part of her Miss Zululand duties, she had to give back to the community and she decided this was the best way to make an impact.
“I was watching my son play on the tablet one day, totally engrossed, and it took me back to my childhood when we created our own understanding of the world through imagination,” she said.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to dream and books provide the place to do that.”
Ramnarain said she had collected more than 300 books so far and had identified several schools where she wanted to set up reading corners in classrooms.
She has appealed for donations of books for grade one to seven children, if the books are second hand they should just be in good condition.
She also appealed for sponsorship to help her spread the joy of reading – all sponsorships will go through the Kwaphenduka NGO, which can issue tax certificates. Contact Leean Ramnarain at 078 456 0568.
