On the runway to success

"I love to design clothes that combine femininity and boyish playfulness and edge.”

A young and upcoming Ballito fashion designer is one of four lucky talents in SA to get a Fastrack ticket boosting her from graduation to the runway.

Cari St Quentin has been chosen to be part of the African Fashion International (AFI) development programme, Fastrack and will be doing her internship at Jockey.

The 22-year-old, petite designer said she always knew she wanted to be in the fashion world.

“I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was about five or six years old. I am not sure how serious I was about it then, but I got serious about fashion and my career in high school. Keeping up with the industry became my main interest,” said St Quentin who lives in Salt Rock and recently completed her BA in fashion design at the Design School Southern Africa.

What she loves most about fashion and designing collections is that the goal is not just to create beautiful clothes.

“Fashion design is a reflection of society, culture, history and the world around us. It is always changing and reinventing itself. I cannot imagine myself in any other industry.

“I love to design clothes that combine femininity and boyish playfulness and edge.”

She said being part of the AFI programme was completely unexpected and exciting.

“I am so grateful for this opportunity! I hope to learn as much wisdom and knowledge as possible during my internship over the next four months. I also want to bring forward a really strong collection, and challenge myself to make it my best range yet.”

Cari will start her internship program at Jockey in Durban on April 16, while preparing her collection for the Johannesburg Fashion Week in August.

After showcasing at the Joburg Fashion Week, one of the four interns will be selected to work with AFI’s in-house label, Prive.

This year’s winner will get R15 000 and a trip to New York.
