Homeless students shut down Umfolozi TVET College

Students have been camping out at the college since Tuesday.

More than 300 students said today that they have nowhere to go after the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) failed to pay rent money this year.

Thrown out on the street by their landlords after not being able to pay thier rent the students protested at the Umfolozi TVET College‘s  Chief Albert Luhthuli campus in Groutville today (Friday).

The student have been camping at the college since Tuesday.

Students were eventually forced out of the college by the police.

“We want the college to supply us with accommodation and we will go back to class,” said one of the students.

A meeting between the leadership of the students and the management of the college was held, however it proved unsuccessful.

They said they will stay outside the college gates until their demands are met.

The campus manager declined to comment.

Attempts to contact the spokesperson have been unsuccessful.

The college remains closed due to the ongoing dispute.
