Car dragged by train at Etete – driver killed
Long grass makes it difficult to see oncoming trains before it is too late.
The family of an elderly Etete man are left heartbroken after he was killed by a goods train while driving over the railway line this morning.
Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said the 78-year-old man was the uncle of a KwaDukuza SAPS police officer.
His family also owns a popular restaurant in Tinley Manor.

The deceased is not being named as his extended family have not yet been informed.
“The family have lived in the area for many years. We offer our sincere condolences,” said Pillay.
Pillay said the failure of authorities to maintain the undergrowth around the train tracks at Etete may have caused the accident.
“The problem is that the railway track and the area around it are not being maintained.
“The grass is long and for people to cross the level crossing, they need to actually get into the track before they can see if there is a train coming.
“This time, it was too late.”
According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst, the vehicle was dragged about 60 meters before the train came to a stop.
“He was declared dead on arrival of paramedics.”
