Country road, take me home to Mahlawe

Residents of Mahlawe in Maphumulo, 52km inland of KwaDukuza, will soon no longer have to worry about the road washing away in a sea of mud when it rains.

Construction on the Esihlahleni Road, joining the R74 and D1530, started on Monday and is estimated to take 12 months until completion.

Currently taxis are not able to travel along the road when it rains because of the deep mud – leaving the people virtually landlocked.

So far the project resulted in employment for ten local people and more will be employed as the project continues.

During the sod turning last Thursday, Maphumulo municipality deputy mayor Zama Ncalane said the construction of the road would encourage economic development, promote public transport and improve access for emergency services and safety for school children.

Ncalane urged the community to give the constructor their full cooperation as time and patience was required in order to complete the project.

“We hope that the community will respect the constructor and give him all the cooperation and patience needed for the duration of this contract. This project will provide job opportunities and skills training for our local people and youth in particular,” said Ncalane.
