Vote for Vinny, the Dolphin Coast’s supercop
Captain Pillay is known far and wide as one of those rare public servants who truly goes the extra mile.
Everyone’s favourite policeman, captain Vinny Pillay is one of five civil servants from across SA competing for the 2018 Integrity Idols award.
Integrity Idol is a global campaign to recognise and reward honest and outstanding government officials, Pillay was originally one of 4000 nominees and has since made it to the final five.
The Umhlali SAPS’ captain is also the spokesperson for the station and is known throughout the North Coast for his friendliness and tireless effort to serve the community.
“I became a policeman because I always wanted to work in – and with – the community,” the 47-year-old father of one told the Courier.
“My brother Basil was a policeman and as a child I would watch him and the other officers at work, thinking what heroes they were. He is probably the main reason I joined the service.”
Pillay, who has been a policeman since 1993, told the Courier he believed integrity boiled down to honesty on a daily basis and in everything you do.
As part of the Integrity Idols campaign, a moving inspirational video was made about captain Vinny, where filmmakers followed him through the community to get a taste for his job at the grassroots level.
