UPDATE: Good news for Sashni Daniel

"She also seems to recognise faces which doctors say is great."

Sashni Daniel’s family were beyond relieved when her doctors announced that the young woman would not require another operation.

The 27-year-old was hit by a rock while travelling along the R102 on February 25, during a violent service delivery protest in Shaka’s Head.

She was rendered unconscious, suffering severe head trauma which included swelling to the brain, three blood clots and a fractured skull.

The Stanger woman spent most of her stay at Albert Luthuli hospital in a coma, after having to undergo three operations to relieve swelling from her brain.

Last week, Sashni’s disabled father, Kovi, told the Courier that an abscess had developed on Sashni’s brain and that she may require surgery to remove it.

However, the abscess has disappeared with medication.

“This would have been her fourth surgery since her admission and every time she goes in, the road to recovery gets longer.

“Thankfully, she was put on a course of antibiotics and the abscess disappeared within a few days.”

Kovi said his daughter, a Ballito jewellery consultant, is showing good signs of recovery despite some major challenges.

“She is now starting to speak a little louder and she is still in the general ward.

“She is breathing on her own and eating soup.

“She also seems to recognise faces which doctors say is great.

“Our greatest challenge is that Sashni has lost feeling on the left side of her body but she is undergoing physiotherapy.”

The protest that caused Sashni’s condition came after the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) cut their overtime pay, preventing electricians from working after hours.

This left a number of areas, including Shaka’s Head, in the dark for 11 hours.

Eleven cars had been stoned with four motorists, including Sashni, suffering injuries.
