The pedestrian safety fence is here
With the P445 being a provincial road, the Ballito UIP had to go through a lengthy approval process.
The installation of the fence along the P445 to prevent pedestrians from crossing the busy road began on Monday night.
The 700 metre Clearvu safety fence will be installed on the center median along the section of road from the M4 intersection to the McDonald’s intersection (Moffatt Drive).
Ballito Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) security manager Dieter Fittkau said the project started after growing concerns to address pedestrian safety.

“With a consistent number of pedestrian accidents occurring monthly we view this safety fence as critical in reducing the risk of pedestrian fatalities,” said Fittkau.
With the P445 being a provincial road, the Ballito UIP had to go through a lengthy approval process involving the department of transport and KwaDukuza municipality in order to get the green light.
Ballito UIP precinct manager Thierry Leclezio said the fence would be installed by Cochrane Engineers and Manufacturers as their quality, pricing and 10-year guarantee best responded to the Ballito UIP spec.
“The UIP will be paying for the materials and installation of the safety fence and will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repairs of the structure. As such a very clear spec was put out in a call for quotes and clear adjudication criteria were used to ensure alignment with this spec and the requirements of both the department of transport and KDM,” he said.

The product installed will be a “straight up finish”, charcoal grey, Clearvu safety fence that matches the fencing installed at the Ballito Junction and McDonald’s / Virgin Active properties.
The fence will be anchored 600 mm underground and will stand 1,2 meters above the ground.
“Due to the busy nature of the road and to ensure as little commuter inconvenience as possible, the installation will take place at night,” said Leclezio.
All landscaping will be removed and replanted once the job is complete which is expected to be by June 1.
