WATCH: Township residents march against Umhlali police
The community have given the station commander a list of cops they believe to be corrupt.
A crowd of more than a hundred Nkobongo and Shayamoya residents marched to the Umhlali police station earlier today, saying they were unhappy with the service they received from the police.
Led by Nkobongo councillor Ali Ngidi, the police were accused of turning a blind eye on the issues of illegal guns, rape and taverns that operate 24 hours a day.
They were also accused of not following up on cases opened by the people residing in the townships.
“We have a list of police officers who are corrupt and are involved in drug dealership in our communities.
“We will give it to the station commander, colonel Khethiwe Makhathini,” said Ngidi.
Their memorandum was accepted by the station commander, who promised to look into their concerns.
“My office is always open for those who want to share information with me.
“I have accepted your memorandum and I will be noting all your complaints,” said Makhathini.
A number of the marchers sported bright yellow ANC T-shirts as the march was initiated by the ANC branches in Nkobongo and Shayamoya.
