Triple trouble at Stanger Hospital

Doctors say the Cesarean section was just in time, as one week later could have placed the mom at high risk.

The 31-year-old Owethu Macebo is the proud new mother to an all-boy set of triplets born at Stanger hospital on Wednesday.

The Darnall resident spent a month at the hospital and underwent a Ceasarean section 33 weeks into her pregnancy.

Her three boys were named Esakhe, Wenzile and Ibonile and weighed in at 1,75kg, 1,7kg and 1,5kg respectively.

“I’m very grateful to everyone who helped me deliver. Even at the maternity ward, where I’ve been for a whole month, I’ve had a very good stay. I’m very thankful,” said Macebo, whose family has a history of twins.

The delivery of triplets was also a first for the 30 year-old Dr Mpilo Zimu, who led the obstetric, neonatal, and anesthetics team.

“It was a good experience. The only difference to any other Cesarean section was the number of babies that were coming out,” said Dr Zimu, who was assisted by paediatrician specialists Dr Heloise Goodfellow, Dr Victor Olujobi, and Dr Nalisu Mazubane.

“I would like to say congratulations to the team, and to the consultants for making a decision to deliver on time. It was a successful operation and the mother is fine.”

KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has congratulated the team from Stanger Hospital for a job well done.

“We are very excited. We want to congratulate the family, and the hospital that these triplets were born at 33 weeks, which is not really the time of giving birth.

“We are confident, in fact certain, that these triplets will do well at Stanger Hospital, because this facility has one of the best neonatal care units,” said Dr Dhlomo.
