UPDATE: Sashni to return home!

Doctors say the Ballito jewellery consultant may never make a full recovery, but her story is far from over.

After fighting for her life in hospital for more than three months, Sashni Daniel is fully responsive, laughing and cannot wait to return to the comfort of her own home.

The 27-year-old Stanger resident suffered massive head trauma after she was hit by a rock thrown at the car she was travelling in during a Shaka’s Head service delivery protest on the R102.

After undergoing three brain surgeries as well as suffering from a stroke and meningitis, Sashni was transferred from Nkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital to Stanger Hospital last week – where she is set to undergo physiotherapy before she is discharged.

The Ballito jewellery consultant who is cracking jokes and worried about her appearance said she was thankful for everyone’s prayers and shyly smiled when her father, Kovi Daniel, told her she is now a celebrity.

When asked how she was doing she replied: “I am feeling better today, how are you feeling?”

Asked if she knew what landed her in the hospital she said she had been in an accident which she does not entirely remember.

Despite being in good spirits, Kovi explained that Sashni has a long road to recovery as the stroke affected the left side of her body leaving her unable to move her left leg.

The 27-year-old Stanger resident suffered massive head trauma after she was hit by a rock thrown at the car she was travelling in.

“She is still slightly confused at times but her memory is slowly improving because a few months ago, she would just look at people and cry.

“We understand that with head trauma, she cannot ever be completely the same as she was previously.

“She cannot sit up on her own and at the moment she is not walking.”

Kovi who has been disabled for most of his life said he hoped his daughter would not suffer the same fate.

Now the challenge for the family is to renovate parts of their home to accommodate Sashni.

“A few companies and people have been donating money and material for me to build a ramp. We also need to renovate her room, replace her bed with a hospital bed and renovate the bathroom and toilet.”

Sashni lives with her disabled father and 78-year-old grandmother.

She was the only breadwinner in her family and they do not have enough money to hire a full-time nurse, which Sashni desperately needs once she is discharged.

Umhlali SAPS Captain Vinny Pillay is trying to rally the community to assist in planning a surprise birthday party and is collecting donations for renovations to their home.

“We want to throw Sashni a party when she is discharged to celebrate her life.

“It will be held at her house and we are hoping to get donations for a marquee, decor and food.

“I am also collecting donations for the renovations and we are desperately looking for a hospital bed as Sashni’s bed currently stands on bricks.”
