Inspiring the future on Take a Girl Child to Work Day
The young girls were encouraged to overcome barriers that stood in the way of women achieving their full potential in the workplace.
A group of determined young women were given a taste of the working world during an enlightening visit to Sembcorp Siza Water (SSW).
Last week, the water supplier celebrated the annual Cell C “Take a Girl Child to Work Day” by hosting a group of career-focused girls from secondary schools in the Ballito area and exposing them to different career options within the organisation.
The young girls were encouraged to overcome barriers that stood in the way of women achieving their full potential in the workplace.
SSW financial manager Herman Botha said there were three obstacles that posed a problem for women.
“The first is the outdated perception that men are better workers than women. The second is a lack of education, and the third – a male dominant economy.”
He added that girls are sometimes forced to take a different path rather than follow their dreams.

“Often girls leave school early to work at home and look after their families. This keeps them from reaching their full potential and having the careers they would otherwise be able to pursue.”
Botha said that in recent months, SSW amended its procurement policy to bridge the gap between woman and men and by giving preference to women-owned businesses as suppliers.”
“Believe, don’t limit yourselves. Siza Water offers bursaries and we encourage you to utilize this opportunity and submit your applications.”
After enjoying a light breakfast, the girls were given a tour of the Frasers Waste Water Treatment plant where they were taken step by step through the processes of wastewater and water purification.
Their third stop for the day was a visit to the Hugh Dent Pump Station Salt Rock where fitter, Silungile Madlala answered all the girls’ questions before proceeding to SSW’s head office for their final part of the tour visiting customer services, finance and projects departments.
