Union members deny closing road at Imbonini

THOR workers from Boxer Meat Factory are currently on strike but deny closing the road in Shaka's Head last night.

Members of the Transport Action Retail and General Workers Union (THOR) have denied their involvement in the protest outside Imbonini Park on the Shaka’s Head road last night.

The members, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were currently involved in a wage dispute with Boxer Meat Factory within the industrial park but that they should not be blamed for the road closure.

They claimed the community had been protesting about service delivery, however Shaka’s Head ward councillor Mlamuli Ndlela said she was unaware of any ‘community protest action’ having taken place.

Among the things demanded by Boxer workers was a salary increase of 10% for permanent workers, 15% increase in their night shift allowance and they also complain about the high number of workers who are not permanent but have been working at the factory for years.

Attempts to contact the factory or the official THOR spokesperson were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
