UPDATE: Calls to rally behind Sashni

Captain Pillay of Umhlali police is trying to rally the community to assist in planning a surprise party and is collecting donations for the renovations.

After more than three months, Sashni Daniel was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.

On February 25, the 27-year-old Stanger resident suffered massive head trauma after she was hit by a rock thrown at the car she was travelling in during a service delivery protest on the R102 at Shaka’s Head.

After undergoing three brain surgeries as well as suffering from a stroke and meningitis, last week she was transferred from Nkosi Albert Luthuli hospital, where she was treated for almost three months, to Stanger Hospital where she was discharged after a week long stay. She is still set to undergo physiotherapy and speech therapy.

The Courier visited the young lady who is laughing, joking and, like every girl would, worrying about her appearance.

When asked how she was doing, she replied, “I’m feeling better today, how are you feeling?”

The brave woman said she was thankful for everyone’s prayers and shyly smiled when her father, Kovi Daniel, told her she is now a celebrity. She still does not fully remember the accident.

With the help of the community, her father Kovi and Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay are hoping to revamp the family’s bathroom and Sashni’s bedroom to make it easier for her to navigate in a wheelchair.

She is currently staying with her boyfriend until the renovations to her home are complete.

Kovi explained that Sashni had a long road to recovery as the stroke affected the left side of her body leaving her unable to move her leg. Kovi, who has been disabled for most of his life, prayed his daughter would not suffer the same fate.

“I do not care about the minor problems, I just want my daughter to come back home.

“To me, it felt like I lost my daughter twice because it was touch and go and that pain was unbearable.

“I want to express my gratitude to the many people who prayed for Sashni because it is against all odds that she is with us today.”

Captain Pillay of Umhlali police is trying to rally the community to assist in planning a surprise party and is collecting donations for the renovations.

“We want to throw Sashni a party to celebrate her life. It will be held at her house and we are hoping to get donations for a marquee, decor and food. I am also collecting donations for the renovations.”

A special bed has been given to the family by an anonymous donor.
