Where to go to see the Sardine Run today

A false alarm caused much excitement at Scottburgh this morning where the sardines netted turned out to be bait fish.

Sightseers hoping to catch a glimpse of the epic Sardine Run can head down to Port Shepstone today.

KZN Sharks Board operations manager Greg Thompson said the main sardine activity was concentrated at Port Shepstone with isolated pockets going south to Port Edward.

Sardines were also netted at Umzumbe beach this morning on the South Coast, however Thompson said they may not remain in that area for too long as they sporadically move around along the coast.

“There was a false alarm at Scottburgh where bait fish were netted there early this morning,” he said.

Thompson said it was difficult to distinguish bait fish from sardines without netting a sample.

Dolphin and shark activity continues to be high with large numbers following the sardines.

Shark safety gear has been removed from all protected beaches (bar one or two) from the Durban beachfront to Port Edward.

Thompson cautioned again that there was no guarantee the fish would arrive in Durban soon, or at all.

The Sharks Board has appealed to members of the public to exercise caution should they enter the water during this time.
