Stepping into the world of Pro surfing
Together with Sisonke and Surfers Not Street Children, the Ilembe Surf Riders will be showing off their skills in The Sea Harvest Outreach in association with The Ballito Pro fun competition on Sunday, July 1.
The young Ilembe Surf Riders are being woven into The Ballito Pro presented by Billabong as they help out behind the scenes and watch their surfing icons up close for Pro tips.
Ilembe Surf Riders’ Michelle Sykes said they are proud to have some of the development kids given the chance to not only learn to surf and swim, but also see what great opportunities the world of surfing has to offer.
“We are grateful to have the Ballito Pro in our town for a chance for our Ilembe Surf Riders to learn the ropes on the international surfing scene,” said Sykes.
Together with Sisonke and Surfers Not Street Children, the Ilembe Surf Riders will be showing off their skills in The Sea Harvest Outreach in association with The Ballito Pro fun competition on Sunday, July 1 from 9am to 1pm.

The day will start with a wholesome breakfast and a Sea Harvest T-Shirt, followed by a fun surf programme run by Danielle from Surfing South Africa (SSA) with assistance from Ilembe Surf Riders. SSA will also be providing medals for the kids and they will get lunch packs at the end of the day. The aim behind the day is not so much the competitive aspect, but rather to get the kids to enjoy the sea.
Sisonke’s top older surfers will join the roughly 40 kids in their tag team events and help them in the water.
The Ilembe Surf Riders also have a fund raising raffle running during The Ballito Pro, which will go towards the Learn to Swim and Learn to Surf Programmes.
To date they have 20 children who are part of their beach culture, and going forward, they hope to double that with the assistance of volunteers.
“Thanks to Linda Hlope for his dedication to these groms. We also thank businesses in the area such as Fiamma Grill, SMG Rocks, Mozambik, African Paradise, the committee and members who put in their time and effort to make Ilembe Surf Riders a work in progress,” said Sykes.
