Ballito’s piggy bank turns 50

By the end of the 70's, the continuous growth of the town saw the agency even opening for business on Mondays.

Standard Bank employees dressed for the occasion and treated their customers to cupcakes and breakfast spoils as they celebrated their 50 years in Ballito last week.

Ballito branch manager Vaniesha Ramkaran said the bank started off as a mobile agency service under the Stanger branch in 1967.

“Initially the mobile agency only visited the town on Fridays, but a few months later the visits increased to twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” said Ramkaran.

“On June 21, 1968 the agency opened in fixed premises in the town, trading three days a week.”

By the end of the 70’s, the continuous growth of the town saw the agency even opening for business on Mondays.

“In May 1983 Standard Bank changed the name of the Ballitoville agency to Ballito and by 1986 its opening hours were further increased to include Saturdays.

“From December 1, 1987 the Ballito agency was housed in Shop no.5 in Sandra Road.”

The branch later moved to the Ballito Lifestyle Centre and more recently to the Ballito Junction, where it offers everything including personal and small enterprise banking services, a Bureau de Change facility, prestige and private banking, and the services of a Standard Bank Financial Consultancy planner.

“We are proud to be a part of this celebration of 50 years, and are honoured to continue serving our loyal customers, whom we thank for banking with us,” said Ramkaran.
