Break the unhealthy cycle
The trick to leading a healthy life is simple - cut out refined sugar and include more raw natural ingredients in your meals.

With so many health trends saturating peoples minds, owner of Lean Addiction Jared Thomas has urged people to go back to basics.
Together with his partner Sarah, the Ballito anti-ageing and fitness specialist provides prepared meals, advanced training programmes, food for weight loss and hormone treatments with the aim of helping people be a healthier version of themselves.
Thomas said the trick to leading a healthy life was simple – cut out refined sugar and include more raw natural ingredients in your meals.
“The biggest drive is anti-ageing and how food affects the aging process.
“We are seeing people who are living until the age of 95 and their diets are made up of raw food and a lot of superfoods, being your beans, Bali and greens. Stay away from all refined foods like bread and cakes because they truly are the enemy.

“Vegetarian and raw foods are so easy going on our bodies that our system digests them a lot faster. High protein foods are very acidic and with that, we notice that inflammation levels are very high.”
With natural being the name of the game in Thomas’ kitchen, he believes the pharmaceutical industry is the cause of most health-related problems, offering a quick fix instead of a long-term solution.
He urged people to be more aware of the ingredients in their foods and where they come from.
“The cycle is that you eat badly, you get sick, you go to the doctor, take medication that is foreign to your body and in two or three months you repeat.”
Having opened the first organic restaurant in South Africa in 2001, Thomas said he did not believe in the carb-free diet trend which has gained popularity for rapid weight loss.
“Our bodies are designed to digest carbs and it is a high energy source. We should be using good carbs to feed the brain and this includes sweet potatoes, butternut, pumpkin and basmati rice. The trick is to get your carbs in during the day while you are at work and need the energy to stay focused. At night, fibre is more important.”
