Tongaat fashionista takes the unusual spin

Driven by her passion for fashion, Lusanda decided to start a clothing store called Carpe Diem Cotton at the Ushaka Mall in KwaDukuza.

While other teenagers head out to university, 19-year-old Lusanda Nyembe aims to focus her mind on her dreams of being a successful entrepreneur.

The Tongaat fashion fan said she cannot take the risk of being unemployed after she graduates, which is why she started her business young.

“The truth is that it’s very difficult to get a job in this country. So I said to my family they should fund me to start a clothing store and when my business is stable, I will be able to pay for my education. There is nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a young person with a degree or diploma but without a job. To avoid that, I want to study when I know that I already have an income,” said Nyembe.

She said she wanted something that will be unique and something that she would not get bored while doing it.

“Fashion changes now and again, so running a clothing store will always be challenging because I have a lot of competition, but I must ensure that I bring something new for my customers.”

The 2015 Belverton Secondary School matriculant said it took her family more than a year to understand and support her idea.

“I come from an educated family and they tried, by all means, to persuade me to go to university. But I was sure about what I wanted and finally, they realised that I need their support.”

She opened her store late last year and so far she is not regretting her decision due to the positive response she is getting from residents.

“I chose to bring my business to KwaDukuza so that I could be away from my peers in Tongaat and give my business undivided attention. I am still young and I have lots of things that I want to do, but a successful business is my primary need,” said Nyembe.
