UPDATE: KZN beaches now open to bathers

Shark nets were removed last week, leaving beaches closed to bathers.

Shark safety gear has been reinstalled and bathing has been reopened at beaches along the KZN coastline.

This following a wage dispute between the KZN Sharks Board and its employees which led to the removal of the shark nets and closure of all of KZN’s swimming beaches for over a week.

In a statement sent out on Thursday afternoon, KZN Sharks Board head of operations Mike Anderson-Read confirmed that the following beaches were safe for swimmers:

  • North Coast: Richards Bay- Alkantstrand, Zinkwazi, Blythedale, Salt Rock, Willard Beach, Westbrook, Umhlanga Rocks.
  • Durban: Ushaka to Suncoast Beach inclusive.
  • South Coast: Amanzimtoti, Umzumbe, Southport, St Michaels, Margate, Ramsgate, San Lameer, Glenmore and Port Edward.

“The Board will continue to deploy gear at the remaining beaches tomorrow,” said Anderson-Reade.

“It should be noted however that intense sardine and associated predator activity is still being experienced on the upper south coast between Illovu and Scottburgh.

“The Board will continue to monitor this activity and only replace gear at beaches within this region once the activity subsides.”
