Some Cuban flavour at Stanger Hospital

Last week Stanger Hospital welcomed 96 medical students who recently returned home after five years of study in Cuba.

They will now complete their final year of studies and training at the UKZN Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine in Durban.

Last week they were placed for training at various regional hospitals including Stanger, RK Khan, Prince Mshiyeni King Edward hospital with clinical rotations to Greytown, Christ the King, GJ Crookes and Wentworth hospitals.

They will spend the rest of the year being trained in surgical practice, obstetrics and gynaecology, internal medicine, child health, primary care and mental health.

At a welcoming event at the hospital nurses’ home on Wednesday, students were reminded of the importance of respecting their careers and given words of encouragement by various speakers from UKZN and the health department.

Stanger hospital medical manager, Dr Gustavo Lopez said as the hospital they felt honoured to be among the hospitals to provide training.

“There were assessments done to check if the hospital will be able to provide the needed training to the students, therefore there is no greater reward than that we will contribute to not only the numbers but to the quality of healthcare workers,” said Lopez.

One of the students, Sabelo Mnguni from Empangeni, said they were excited to be receiving training.

“Hopefully we will be able to share the information we got while we were in Cuba and we are willing to learn,” said Mnguni.
