Kidnapping claims at Ballito park quashed amid valid concerns for safety
Neighbourhood Watch warns of strange men lurking at Townsend Park.
Over the past few weeks several incidents of women and girls being approached or followed by strange men have sparked concern in the community.
However, wild rumours of child abductions and the like have no basis.
Ballito’s Townsend Park in particular seems to be a problem area. Early in August a young lady was walking her dogs in the park when she was approached by a stranger who wanted her to accompany him to his car and take a selfie.
According to Candice Henderson of the Ballito Neighbourhood Watch there have been multiple reports of strange men approaching or following women near the park.
There have even been reports of men allegedly taking photographs of children at play, though these have not been confirmed.
“Ballito Neighbourhood Watch and the active local security companies are aware of this current problem and the valid concerns,” said Henderson.
She said security agencies had confronted people in vehicles loitering near the park several times, after which they left the area.
Domestic workers in the area of the park have also reportedly been followed by men as they walk to or from work.
Both Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay and Henderson said they were not aware that any child had been kidnapped and urged people not to spread rumours.
“In one case,” said Pillay, “It was merely an Uber driver parked across from the new municipal building who had been waiting for a fare.”
Pillay did say they were aware of the reports of suspicious men in the Townsend Park area and would be investigating.
“I urge people, especially women, to be careful when walking alone. If you spot any suspicious individuals or are approached by anyone, try to get a registration number so we can trace them.”
If you have been approached by strangers or have a number plate of a suspicious vehicle, contact captain Pillay at 073 310 0103.
