WATCH: Residents march against Umhlali SAPS

Motorists are advised to use the N2 as the crowd make their way down the R102 from Shakaskraal to Umhlali SAPS.

Nkobongo, Etete and Shakaskraal residents are marching to Umhlali police station this morning, protesting against drug dealers in the township.

The protest, led by the ANC in Nkobongo, began at around 9.30am at the Nkobongo Community Hall.

Shakaskraal councillor Doeshie Govender, who is also attending the peaceful protest said, “We are tired of what is going on. Our local cops are not assisting us one bit.

“From 2014 to 2018, 14 people were murdered by the very same drug lords who are selling the drugs in our streets. Our schools now are being infested with these drugs, called Whoonga.

“Children are being raped in school and the cops are doing nothing. The department of education is doing nothing.”

“We have decided to call on this peaceful protest.”

The crowd, led by the ANC in Nkobongo, makes its way to the police station.

Earlier this year a crowd of more than a hundred Nkobongo and Shayamoya residents marched to the Umhlali police station, saying they were unhappy with the service they received from the police.

Led by Nkobongo councillor Ali Ngidi, the police were accused of turning a blind eye on the issues of illegal guns, rape and taverns that operate 24 hours a day.

They were also accused of not following up on cases opened by the people residing in the townships.

“We have a list of police officers who are corrupt and are involved in drug dealership in our communities,” said Ngidi.

Motorists are advised to use the N2 as the crowd make their way down the R102 from Shakaskraal to Umhlali SAPS.
